The love affairs of Madame de Pompadour, mistress to Louis XV – lavishly illustrated in linen and organdy, with an elaborate honeycomb background. Hand embroidered in Madeira. A rare set, and very beautiful.
This pattern was part of the "Romance Series", designed in the 1930s by Herman Klein of Imperial Linens, adapting scenes from 18th century masterpiece paintings.*
In this set there are four different scenes, 2 mats of each.
Excellent condition, gently used. Hand laundered, bright and clean. We note some ultra faint discolorations on the napkins – practically impossible to see. This set looks marvelous.
8 napkins, 17.5 x 18 inches.
* See The Embroidery of Madeira, Walker and Holman, 1987. These same vignettes were also used in the famous Princess Grace tablecloth, designed at the time of Grace Kelly's marriage to Prince Rainier.
