A breathtaking and historically significant piece—this extraordinary D. Porthault tablecloth and napkin set was personally commissioned by the Duchess of Windsor. Embellished with whimsical heart motifs and metallic accents, it is exquisitely hand-embroidered with the finest French needlework, including Beauvais embroidery and satin stitch.
Clearly a personal favorite of the Duchess, this tablecloth was both treasured and frequently used. Unlike fine linens that remain tucked away—preserved but forgotten—this piece was a beloved part of the Windsors’ famously elegant dinners and intimate gatherings, a true reflection of their refined entertaining style.
But this tablecloth is something truly special. It is utterly unique, romantic, and unlike anything we’ve seen before. The whimsical heart motifs, the exquisite embroidery, and the undeniable sense of playfulness suggest that it was chosen with intention, perhaps even as a reflection of the Duchess’s own love story with the Duke—a bold, unconventional romance that defied expectation.
It remains a rare and extraordinary treasure.
Part of the landmark 1998 Sotheby’s auction of the Windsors’ estate, this tablecloth was even featured in The New York Times coverage of the sale, a reflection of its importance among the extraordinary treasures offered. The original Sotheby’s hangtags from the auction are included (the hangtags are dated September 1997, but the actual auction was postponed to February 1998 due to the death of Princess Diana).
Condition is good, though not perfect. Recently laundered, bright and clean, with each piece retaining its original laundry tag. The napkins, each matching a motif on the tablecloth, seem rarely used. On the tablecloth, we note meticulous and somewhat extensive repairs throughout the embroidery and linen, some fading to the top motifs, missing embroidery, worn areas over the metallic thread, and some very faint discolorations.
Despite all, the piece remains stable, and its beauty and significance are undeniable. Much will be forgiven. This exceptionally romantic set offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to bring a piece of history to your own table.
